Dealing with social anxiety is hard and can render us incapable of making the most of new social settings. Read below some easy tips and techniques to help you better cope with your social anxiety.

  1. Remember their name
    • Avoid saying, ” I am bad at remembering names.”
    • Dale Carnegie says, “a person’s name is to that person, the sweetest and most important sound in any language.”
    • Be considerate and put an effort to get to know people.
  2. Be contagious and compelling
    • There is a great article by Nerdfitness, who challenges us to talk in a more upbeat manner.
    • It is more contagious to talk to someone who is in a cheerful mood.
  3. Use conversation prompts
    • Ask better questions to have interesting conversations.
    • Great examples are:
      • “what was something exciting you did this summer?”
      • “have you been to any new restaurant lately?”
    • Ask for people’s thoughts on a topic you are interested in.
    • Other topic ideas include:
      • music (what was the last concert or show you’ve attended?)
      • the latest movie they’ve seen
      • a cool interest they have
      • something unique about their hometown
      • their last vacation getaway
  4. Build rapport with a follow-up plan
    • To foster long term connections, try these statements:
      • ” Send me a snap/picture/video of the restaurant you are going to tonight.”
      • ” Tell me how the ________ goes.”
      • “Let’s meet again and you can tell me more about _______.”

“Good social skills can be learned, developed, and improved. It’s really tough to practice unless you commit to trying it out” (Nerdfitness).
