3 Ways to Have Deep Conversations

Spread the love

When you first meet someone, it can be difficult to have deep conversations and avoid small talk. Here are 3 easy techniques to have better conversations and meaningful interactions.

How to have Deep Conversations

Conversation tip, transition to a random topic by saying, "my friend ask a great question the other day"

Tip #1: To discuss a random topic, be your own wingman and start the conversation with:

  • My friend asked a great question the other day, ask your question here.
  • My friend told me a great story the other day, tell your story here.

To better gauge your audience, redirect the conversation by asking for their input:

  • What are your thoughts?”
  • “What do you think I should do in this situation?”
Conversation tip, to hear exciting stories, begin your questions with, "How or Why"

Tip #2: To encourage storytelling response, begin your questions with “how” or “why,”

  • “Why did you decide to travel there?”
  • Why did you choose that career path?”
  • “How has your week been?”

Encourage thought-provoking conversations by avoiding yes or no questions and asking “what do you do?” It is hard to continue a conversation from a yes or no response.

Conversation tip, tell a personal story and then redirect the conversation

Tip #3: Open the conversation with a personal or vulnerable story. Keep in mind the area you want the conversation to be focused on.

Others will likely open up when you show vulnerability. This is a great way to transition into difficult conversations and learn about your partner. Remember to be cognizant of the other person by asking one of the following questions:

  • “What have you been working on?”
  • “What are you looking forward to?”
  • “Have you had a similar experience?”
  • What have you been struggling with?”

All in all, learn interesting things by asking interesting questions. Use these tips to build meaningful connections and have better conversations.
