Important Resume Tips to Remember

  • You have less than 10 seconds to impress an employer
  • Ensure the first few bullet points in your Summary of Qualifications highlight exactly what the employer is looking for.
    • You can find these key skills from the first few skills listed on the job description.
  • If you have less than 3-5 years of experience, your resume should not be more than one page.
  • In addition, if you have limited work experience, you can highlight your course and internship experiences under the Relevant Experience header.

Quick Tips on What to Avoid

  • Firstly, career objectives are no longer relevant
    • This section is not useful to employers. Employers want to know right away how you are a good fit for the job. Don’t use precious resume space to write about your job interest. You want to immediately show them how you match what they need.
  • Also, do not include reference information as the HR department will contact you about that.
  • Writing generic bullet points
    • If your job position title was omitted and we only looked at your job bullet points, do these points sound generic?
    • Instead: Quantify your experiences as much as you can. List numbers, systems, databases and software to create specific bullet points. This will showcase your uniqueness in comparison to other candidates.

  1. Thanks for pointing out that having less experience might mean that I will need a longer resume to really sell myself. I’d like to find a resume consultation service soon because I’m interested changing careers in the future. Making my resume look more appealing would be ideal.
