Tell us your long-distance relationship story. How did you meet your partner, Tuomas?

We met online in 2016 in a Pokémon League and started dating in 2017.

He’s from Finland and I’m from the US. He’s Finnish and I’m Puerto Rican-American. I have learned about sisu from him which is the Finnish word for strength and determination, both are needed in long-distance relationships.

We share a love for history and science. We really enjoy the fact that we can talk about nerdy things together. I really love his brain.

What are some of your favourite memories together

Over the phone, I’ve enjoyed our deep discussions and relationship check-ins. It gives us time to learn more about each other and ways we can make our relationship better.

In person, I love traveling and playing video games with him.

What is the best and worst part of your relationship?

The best part of our relationship is how understanding and dependable we are for each other.

The worst, which truth be told really isn’t that bad, are the times where I am more spontaneous than he is. Tuomas wants to take things slow and think of all the options.

How have you grown from this relationship?

I have learned how to be more patient and Tuomas has learned how to be more proactive.

How do you keep it interesting?

We keep things interesting by trying to learn more about each other as well as understand who we are as a person.

How do you know it’s worth it? How do you deal with the hard times?

I know it’s worth it from seeing the changes we’ve made in order to better ourselves within the relationship. We’ve dealt with hard times by making time to do more video calls and really understanding what’s going on in each other’s life.

What traits do you think are important in order to have a successful relationship? Why?

Consistency, I know a lot of people say communication but if your communication and the things you talk about aren’t consistent with your actions, then no amount of communication will work.

What advice do you have for other couples?

Really look into the love languages and look at how to apply them into other areas of your relationship. For example, when you are feeling happy, sad, or lonely.
